Meet the hosts
Barry
Barry is a proud father and grandad, excited to co-host ‘Educating Barry’ with his son David. Born in Essex and a member of the “Baby Boomer” generation, Barry brings a wealth of experience and heartfelt wisdom to their discussions.
As a white heterosexual male happily married for over twenty years, Barry identifies as a proud ally to the LGBTQ+ community. He has attended London Pride twice with David and in 2022 Barry was honoured to walk in the parade. Barry's pride in his son's journey and his commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community shines through in every episode.
A fan of Monty Python and John Cleese, Barry enjoys a good laugh and doesn't take life too seriously. He’s a keen football fan, albeit a long-suffering West Ham supporter. Barry's competitive spirit emerged unexpectedly on holiday when he and his five-year-old grandson won a stage contest against an older opponent, much to everyone's delight.
David
As the founder of Queer Education Consultancy, David works tirelessly to support teachers and schools in developing their queer-inclusive practice. However, David’s journey to this point has been full of ups and downs.
As a child of Section 28, David struggled with school, having been bullied every day at secondary school - not knowing who he could turn to. Indeed, even family weren’t really an option.
However, as an adult, David has found his confidence and has accepted his sexuality. A journey that would not have been possible from the love and support of the family.
Unlike Barry, David is not the world’s most avid football fan - even if he had to endure a West Ham match once! You’re more likely to find him enjoying a musical in London’s West End, or taking his beloved Staffy (Henry) for a walk.
